Siesta

Zwei Wochen Siesta warten auf mich!

Vom 1. August bis zum 15. August

Two weeks of siesta is waiting for me!

From 1st August until 15th August

I'm going to take the time off for my soul and myself to hang around.
Maybe I'll also treat myself to some reading time under the apple tree.

einfach abzuhängen

Simply to hang about

To take care of my poor neglected garden and to talk a couple of caring and soothing words with the plants.

beleidigte Erdbeeren

Offended strawberries

Meeting with friends, bring on some fresh colours on the wall...
Would two weeks be sufficient? More than probably not, but it definitely will be a quiet time filled with lots of fun and beautiful activities.

I still remember the last summer when I knitted the 87th fish or so on my way to Verona for my blanket shown above and now I'm asking myself where they are?

Where are all the fish from last summer?

I saw them worked into a colourful blanket, bag and pillows and I saw the works grew. However I never get to see the FOs. I can guarantee you that it must be because I don't go around reading the blogs and so I missed all the finishings (and probably I also missed all the swearing while darning in thousands of ends).

My blanket has been a means of an abundance of jokes. But it didn't matter to me because I'm proud to have finished this piece. It drove me to mix up all my colours together and to just try it out. It lies on the living room floor as accurately as fish can be arranged at a fish market and blocked the way for days on end. It's a shame that I didn't take any photos.

The colours aren't that loud in reality.

Wird es eine zweite Fischedecke geben?

NEIN

Would there be a second fish blanket?

NO

Nachtrag zum Tangorock:

Addendum to the Tango Skirt:

Thank you for all the nice comments! Of course I'll tell you more about its genesis and I'll show you more photos. It's good that you can't see the makeshift elastic band peeping through in these pictures. It has been too hot in the last few days to go find a more professional accessory downtown.

As you can see cleary, I didn't knit the skirt straight up, but with a bit of an age-reducing help around the waiste. It's no Hocus Pocus to knit a good and fitting skirt.

Die Grundregel:

The basic rules:

Measure your firmest area around the hips and the waiste (in the most favourable condition there should be some noticeable difference). The length of the waiste to the firmest part should be about 15-20 cm. Distribute the increases or decreases evenly (depending on whether you're kntting from the top or from the bottom). The rest of the length until the hemline will be knit straight. The important thing about a knitted skirt is to line it, otherwise the skirt will "stick"! It's not that hard! Take the same measuremeant like with the knitted skirt and allow about 2 cm extra on the side. The extra width can be concealed with a band using darts or clever creases. Skirt and linings will be sewn together turned over on the correct side, a second seam lower allows a tunnel for the elastic band. Don't forget to build in a slit for walking room down at the lining seam. Sometimes a girl can be in a hurry and has to run instead of just walking.

Dear Karen, you asked for the pattern and whether I've designed it myself. The pattern for the skirt yes, but the knit pattern I got from pattern books. I hardly think that there's a stitch pattern that has never been knitted yet, even with knit failures. It is so beautiful to juggle around with good materials such as tried-and-true knitting knowledges and patterns yourself. Don't be afraid! Just go out and get those wonderful knitting books and let yourselves be inpired and develop the ideas futher.

Apparently it was a shock that my Baby-yarn will be substituted. I knit the skirt already with the new yarn and I found it even better than the original. It is a bit thinner but I look at it as an advantage. Shawls shouldn't weigh like potato sacks on the shoulders (oh, and BTW my Siesta began with three-weeks back training; the book is on my night table!), but it shoudld wrap up lofty and light around you.

I wish you all a beautiful August summer. Think of me while I'm trying to take care of my spine with all these acrobatic exercises and making conversions about this and that to my plants and, and, and!

Tango mon amour

Last Christmas I got a dance lesson as a present from my family. I wasn't sure whether I should be happy about it or be afraid of it. Memories of the dance lessons in the school seem vivid again: sweaty hands and aching feet. One picture from the End-0f-Year-Ball still exists...and there's a good reason that it's buried deep in a box.

More mature and still without the essential seriousness about the whole affair, we took the first lesson of the harmonious body movements. What should I say? There's a slumbering Latino soul in me and Cha-Cha became my maiden name.

However I'm still at daggers drawn with the pièce de résistance of dance techniques: The Tango. I really doubt that I could ever deliver this dance with such abandon and feeling. Would I have to wait even longer to get that longed for pair of red shoes; to be able to put on a disc with "Mano a Mano" and to just melt with it? Definitely NO. Explanation ensues!

Actually I wanted this post to begin with a dramatic opening picture: A Baccara Rose held in the teeth. However my fear of dentists (the only place that you can come by a set of dentures) took care of this idea for me. You yourselves will just have to imagine the rose held between the teeth, the dance floor that catches fire like with Mortitia and the accompanying music. Maybe then you would understand what drove me to wear my skirt and that "little thing".

Meine Tangoschuhe, diesmal selbst gekauft, und mein neuer Lace-Shawl

My tango shoe, this time bought by yours truly, and my new lace shawl

The starting point of knitting is the fact that I'm running out of my Baby-Yarn and that there are only some remainder of the stock left there. The Baby-Yarn as I know it will be discontinued. But as the substitute, I'm trying the shawl out on the "successor", a test skein, and with a second skein I made the skirt. The yarn is just a tad thinner, but it's just as soft and absolutely perfect for those lacey knits.

It's a matter of taste whether you would knit a net-skirt out of it and I have to admit that it looks pretty much unfavourable and it also magically conjures up a couple more pounds around the waiste. But I'm absolutely thrilled with the lace shawl. I was just practicing beading with the Pfefferminz Prinz Jacket and I used the technique again with the lace shawl and the skirt. Both garments drape a lot more beautifully with the weight of the beads. It even reminds me of the curtains with gold edgings (I don't want to mention the name at this point). Judge for yourselves. The pictures didn't turn out that great and the colours doesn't show as in real life, but you can still see it a bit.

Skirt detail: The edging of the ruffles is knit with an Estonian spiral pattern and falls out like a bell

A little "Sweetness" for myself! I was having so much fun going through the wardrobe and finding things when I was doing the Pfefferminz Prinz post

Ohrenschmuck und Lippenglanz

Ear jewelries and lip radiance

Die Kirschen schmeckten süß und richtig kirschig

The cherries tasted sweet and very cherrily.

Just to follow an example - like my much valued Krawuggl (hey Suzi, how are you?) -, I would like to present a link that's close to my heart to you.

I would like to first introduce the Maschenmädels, a knitting-circle around the Rosenheim area in Oberbayern that is still in its early stages. If you would like to know more about them or just want to participate online, then you should go over to their Yahoo Group.

The next meeting is on 18th July and on 22nd August, each from 6.30 p.m. in CiK (Cafe im Klinikum Rosenheim), Pettenkofer Str. 10, 83022 Rosenheim.

The founder of the group is Maria, a very dear friend of mine and also a knitter with a capital K. There isn't anything that she doesn't know and in case of doubts she can solve all knitting problems. Finally, after much begging, she is going to let us in on her vast knowledge of knitting. A few might know our "Truffle Pig" from her Textile link collection. Please excuse my scurrilous expression "Truffle Pig", I didn't come up with it. You an actually find "truffles" in the link collections and new ones are constantly added.

And here is Maria. She's mostly always that cheery!

The object of desire: My new charming summer shoes. A present from a very good friend. I was so smitten with the shoes when I got them and at the same time the thought raced through my head:

"I have nothing to wear"

The wardrobe is full to the point of breaking, but at the same time absolutely empty. Do you know that feeling? No-one would believe you, but it is just like that. And due to this emergency the "Pfefferminz-Prinz" (Prince Peppermint) was brought into being and I must say that I've been missing this colourway and that I missed the Prince without knowing it.

Meine Schuhe

ich liebe Schuhe

My shoes.

I love shoes.

My shoes with the "Pfefferminz Prinz" jacket, edged amply with "Frosch" (Frog)

The ruffles could have been von Mrs. Beeton's Wrist-Warmers. The similarity was intentional. Even though it was the first time that I worked with beads, I was just too lazy to read the instructions or go through the pattern first. This kind of attitude might seem peculiar, especially when you know that I love knitting books and that I always look at the pictures. There are always exceptions to the rules. Since summer I've put my project with an instruction on hold: The Sunrise Circle Jacket. I haven't given up on it though: on the weekend I bought a felted flower clasp at "Kunst in Stadl" to go with the jacket. My "Mrs. Beeton's Sunday Stroll Jacket" sans instruction came into being pretty fast and without much troubles, especially with the goal of being able to wear it as soon as possible. If it only weren't because of the ruffles...which I find in retrospect a bit over-empowering. My bamboo circs broke with the weight of 1,500 stitches plus the beads. Learn from my failure and take metal needles if you're going to undertake such endeavour.

Of course, I was still able to find something suitable from my wardrobe, even though I'm still of the opinion that nothing sane is stored in there. I found a T-shirt in line with the frog theme. You can't see on the picture, but it's an Indian frog because there's a pink street-stone on his forehead as the symbol of his caste.

Ich liebe witzige Shirts

I just love funny shirts

ich liebe Taschen

And I love bags.

And I love my frog cellphone bag...but without cellphones. It's kind of a crazy funny combination when you put everything together, don't you think?

Don't worry though, I only put together a healty dosis.

Fortsetzung der grünen Serie

The green serie continues

No sock patterns, no other patterns. It can't be, that's what I thought ot myself and so I would like to follow the examples of some of my favourite blogs and show you something new. I'm always fascinated by not only just knitting-related hobbies, but also from the life around the house, impressions from art and culture or simply from excursions into the world of literature. For me, it's simply the process of "looking over one's own nose"! Okay, a recipe for a sorbet doesn't really call for any multi-cultural self-development, but it is perhaps a small pay-back for all the drool-worthy cookies and other delectable yummies that look at, without being abel to get my own hands on them. The recipe had been put through multiple tastings and had been approved as delicious. However you should be warned that woodruff should be picked before the bloom and that time is already over. I don't know exactly whether only the taste suffers after or during the blooms or whether any inedible substances would developed in the plant during that period.

Woodruff Sorbet: Also achieveable without an ice machine and it's also very meltable.

Ingredients: 600 g jelly sugar (the sugar used to make instant jam), 2 whole lemons, 1 bunch of woodruff, 1/4 litre white wine (Riesling), 1 bunch of parsley (optional, it's only for the colour), 1 very fresh egg white

Bring the jelly sugar and 1 litre water to the boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer on low heat for 10 minutes. Stir occasionally. Leave the sugar syrup to cool. Wash the lemons in hot water, cut into slices and add into the sugar syrup along with the woodruff and the wine. Let it sit for three hours (or even better overnight). Chop the parsley and take the juice by squeezing it out through a muslin cloth. Take the woodruff and lemons out of the syrup, add two tablespoon of the parsley juice to "colour" the jelly and put in the freezer for an hour to start the hardening process. Beat the eggwhites until fluffy (but NOT until it forms a mound!) and stir into the semi hardened jelly. Leave in the freezer for about eight hours (or again overnight) until it is solid. Occasionally stirring the mixture while cooling so that the ice crystals will be broken and the sorbet stays creamy.
